Julieta describes Maya's Service Training:
It took about a year to complete the training.
We started going to the airport so she could get used to large crowds. Went to pet friendly stores like Home Depot, walked in the store allowing to be near shopping carts and strange noises. And stood in front of hospital entrances to see her reaction with wheelchairs, walkers and patients with disabilities. First she seemed puzzled why am I here and not playing fetch?! However, she followed patients and walked next to wheelchairs and walkers so naturally and I knew she would be a great therapy dog.
We completed a dog therapy training program thru the City of Phoenix Parks and Rec. Very intense, dog are truly put under a lot of stress to see if they really have what it takes to be a therapy dog.... We passed with flying colors....after that we had to be observed 3 times in a nursing home/hospital by a Therapy Dog Inc. evaluator to obtain the certification. And we got it in December. Maya and I got accepted at Mayo Clinic s Carin Canine Team. Maya has her Mayo Clinic Badge just like any other employee....adorable.
